The ultrasonic dispersion in the incommensurate (antiferroelectric) phase ofNaN0. has been examined by a Brillouin scattering experiment with a specialemphasis on the temperature regulation near its phase transition temperatures.A slight anomaly of rhe frequency shift (Av) of the longitudinal mode was observedonly in the [0I0J direction at the normal-incommensurare transition point T..The remperature dependence of Av in the incommensurate phase is normal in allthe three principal directions [100], [0104 and [001] in contrast to the ultrasonicresults. An apparent dispersion in sound velocity was found in the [0104 direc-lion by comparing with the ultrasonic d'ata. It is confirmed that the dispersionfrequ.ency lies below a hypersonic region. The anisotropy suggests a spatialcharacter of the orientational fluctuation on NO. molecules in the incommensuratephase.
