Ultraviolet Photoexcited Soft Mode Dynamics in Quantum Paraelectrics KTaO3 Doped with Nickel

The ultraviolet (UV) photoexcited effect in the quantum paraelectric perovskite oxide KTaO3 doped with Ni was investigated by low-frequency Raman scattering. The temperature dependences of low-frequency Raman spectra were obtained with and without UV photoirradiation with energies beyond the band gap energy down to the liquid helium temperature. A soft mode was found in Ni-doped KTaO3 below 80 K. The frequency of the soft mode decreased with UV photoirradiation under a DC electric field. That is, the instability of the soft mode was enhanced by UV photoexcitation under an electric field coupled to the ferroelectric order parameter.
