Structural Changes and Ferroelectricity in Bi-Layered SrBi_2Ta_2O_9

Structural changes of bismuth-layered perovskite SrBi_2Ta_2O_9 associated with ferroelectric phase transition were studied by X-ray powder Rietveld analysis. The crystal structure of SrBi_2Ta_2O_9 is tetragonal in the paraclectric phase at 1000K (I4/mmm, R_p = 5.64%, R_<ωp> = 7.37%). The TaO_6 octahedra are distorted along the a-axis and aligned in an antiparallel manner. In the ferroelectric phase, this crystal favors canted arrangements of octahedra below T_c (608 K). These result in net spontaneous polarization along the α-axis. SrBi_2Ta_2O_9 undergoes a canted phase transition, analogous to canted ferromagnets with an anti-symmetrical Dzialoshinski-Moriya-type interaction.
