X-Ray Study of Crystal Structures and Phase Transition in Ferroelectric Ammonium Fluoberyllate (NH_4)_2BeF_4

The crystal structures of (NH.).BeF. have been refined at - 84'C (paraelectricphase) and -140'C (ferroelectric phase). The three-dimensional data werecollected on a four-circle automatic diffractometer with monochromatizedMoKa radiation. The final discrepancy factors are 0.039 (-?84'C) and 0.036( -l40'C). The change of the distribution of hydroge'.t atoms in N(2)H. ion inthe ferroelectric phase is due to the reorientation of this ion. In the ferroelectricphase, BeF3 and NH. ions slightly deviate from th'; paraelectric structure, whichresults in stronger N-H' - ?F hydrogen bonds. Pecause of the hydrogen bonds,N(21)H4 and N(22)H. ions, which are consffdered to owe the occurence offerroelectricity, order in opposite direction along the polar b axis respectively.This suggests that (NH.).BeF. is a ferrielectric rather than a ferroelectric.
