ESR Study of Orthorhombic Fe^<3+> Centers in Sr_2Ta_2O_7 and Sr_2Nb_2O_7

Electron spin resonance spectra of Fe" in single crystals of Sr.Ta.07 andSr.Nb.0. have been investigated at 180'C and 250'C, respectively. The spec-trum of Sr.Ta.0. is attributed to four orthorhombic Fe" centers. Two ofthem show a super-hyperfine splitting at the liquid nitrogen temperature. Othertwo centers are also observed in Sr.Nb.0. at 250'C. Angular dependence of thespectra are described by a spin Hamiltonian with second order terms, D and E.The ratios of E to D and the directions of the principal axes for these centers aredetermined. Brief discussion on the site assignment of these Fe" centers is given.
