Hydrostatic Pressure Effects on the Raman Scattering in Hexagonal Type BaTiO_3

Hydrostatic pressure effects on Raman modes in hexagonal type Basic, have beenstudied. Mode-Griineisen parameters of low lying six allowed Raman modes are deter-mined at room temperature; they are in a range 1.6 - 2.8. Soft phonon modes appearbelow a structural phase transition temperature, T.=22O K at 1 bar. The mode fre-quencies decrease with increasing pressure p; also 7'O decreases with dT./c1p= -3.7K/ kbar. A quantum effect is found.in the T. vs p relation at low temperatures and athigh pressures; T. approaches zero as T.cc(p. -p)"' where p. -48 kbar. The soft-mode frequency vs 7'curves under high pressures show non-classical behaviors with acritical index p= 1 /3 over a rather wide temperature range, 0.51<T/ 7'.<0.95.
