Raman-Scattering Study of the Soft Phonon Modes in Hexagonal Barium Titanate

The Raman spectrum of hexagonal Basic, has been investigated in the temperalure range from 2 K to room temperature. Below the structural-phase-transition tenperature of T.(?222 K), we find the corresponding underdamped soft-phononmodes ; the mode frequencies are proportional to (T. - T )' with p N 1 / 3 in a wide tem-perature range (0.5<7'/7',<0.95). Although, irt the ferroelectric phase belowT.(?74 K), several new features are observed, no soft mode which correlates withthe ferroelectric transition is found.
