Polarized X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure of La_2CuO_<4-y>Single Crystal

Polarized Cu K X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) has been measured on asingle crystal of undoped La.Cu0. , for the first time, using a fluorescence detectiontechnique. The polarized near-edge structure and EXAFS were strongly anisotropic,demonstrating the quasi-two-dimensional nature of electron states and local struc-ture. The polarization dependence of the near-edge structure confirms that the Cuatoms take 24 valence or d' configuration with a strong fourfold Cu-01 bondswithin the CU02 plane and weak twofold Cu-02 bonds along the c-axis, which is con-sistent with the anisotropic local structure suggested by the Fourier transform ofpolarized EXAFS and a crystal structure.[X-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS, near-edge, local structure, electron ll states, single crystal, LazCu0. , high-7'. superconductorI
