Polarized X-Ray Absorption Spectra of Bromine-Doped Polyacetylene;Evidence for Highly-Oriented Polybromine Ions

Polarized extended X-rav absorrtion fine structure (EXAFS) and near-edgesrectra are measttred on the Br K-ed:e for streteh-oriented trans-(CHBrj).. Alarge difference is observed in both the EXAFS and near-edge regions between thespectra with the polarization vector E parallel and perpendicular to the axis oforientation. The Fourier transrorm resutts or polarized EXAFS aemonstratethat polybromine tons are highl,y oriented along the at>rat axis an the aopantconcentration 0.015<,v<0.036. Bromines are also shown to t>e covalently t>onaeawith carbon atoms of the polymer backbone through a substitution reaction anddominate the radial distribution of bromine in the direction perpendicular tothe fibril axis. Polarized near-edge spectra show that the anisotropic bondingstates of bromine are characterized by the Br -Br bond in the parallel directionand the Br-C bond in the rerr>endicular direction to the fibril axis, respectively.,We r>ror>ose that trans-(CHBrv). can be described in terms of hinhlv orientedpo[ybromine ions and brominated carbon chains.
