Refractive Index and Birefringence of Sr_2Nb_2O_7 around the Incommensurate Phase Transition

Dispersion of the refractive indices and temperature dependence of the bire-fringence have been examined in layered perovskite-type Sr.Nb.0.. The refractive in-dices n., n. and n. at 2=0.633 prn are 2.16(2), 2.05(2) and 2.15(2), respectively, at22'C. The dispersions of the refractive indices have been analyzed using a single-termSellmeier oscillator model. The birefringence n. -n. vs T curve exhibits an anomalyaround the incommensurate transition at 7'.=2l6'C. When the sample is annealed ata temperature just below T, the sample exhibits a "memory effect" on the bire-fringence curve.
