Third Order Elastic Constants of Ammonium Bromide near λ-Point

Second order elastic constants of ammonium bromide were measured near2-point in disordered phase under hydrostatic and uniaxial pressures by meansof an ultrasonic method. Third order elastic constants were calculated frompressure derivatives of the second order elastic constants. Cubic and third orderinvariants in free energy expressed in terms of irreducible strains were derivednear 2-point. It was found that the third order invariant played a dominantrole in the vicinity of 2-point in comparison with the cubic invariant.
