Ultrasonic Study of the Polarization Relaxation in Rochelle Salt

The velocity and the attentuation of ultrasonic quasi-longitudinal waves propa-gating along a 45' direction in a 45'X-cut crystal of Rochelle salt have beenmeasured as a function of temperature and frequency in the vicinity of the uppertransition temperature T: by the pulse echo overlapped.method. The anomalousincrease of the attenuation and the anonaalous decrease of the sound velocity arefound near the upper transition temperature T:. From these results, the relaxa-tion timne r; = 6. l x 1 0 = " sec is o btained at A7= T - T: = ] .00 'C, which is in goodagreement with 3.5 x IQ-" sec calculated from the dielectric dispersion.
