Brillouin Scattering in Squaric Acid under Uniaxial Stresses

The longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes in squaric acid were measured byBrillouin scattering as functions of uniaxial stress and temperature. The compressible(c..) and shear (c..) elastic stiffnesses related to irnterlayer bondings were obtainedfrom these studies. Temperatture dependence of these acoustic frequencies has beendiscussed by the aid of the uniaxial stress dependence, and rnainly ascribed to thevariation of interlayer distance due to thermal expansion and the pure temperatureeffect which is present even if the crystal is constrained to cortstant volume.
