Brillouin Scattering Study on the Phase Transition in the Dicalcium Lead Propionate Ca_2Pb(C_2H_5CO_2)_6

The Brillouin spectra of dicalcium lead propionate crystal from both longitudinal and transverse sound wave propagating along the [010] and [001] directions have been studied in the temperature range of 3∼95℃. The intensity of the light scattered by the longitudinal sound waves is higher than that of the transverse one. In comparison with the results of the ultrasonic measurement, dispersion in the sound velocity is found near the transition temperature. An anomaly is seen in the temperature dependence of the hypersound velocity of the transverse wave propagating along the [010] direction and the result seems to suggest that the phase transition mechanism is similar to that of dicalcium strontium propionate.
