Relation between α and β Phases in the Reconstructive Phase Transition of K_2ZnBr_4 Studied by Brillouin Scattering

The elastic anomaly in the first-order α-β phase transition in K_2ZnBr_4 has been studied by Brillouin scattering repeated many times on heating run through the transition point 458 K (T_t). A discrete distribution of the Brillouin frequency shift of the longitudinal acoustic mode in the β phase was observed in contrast to its unique value in the α phase below T_t. On the other hand, the transverse mode shows negligibly small anomalous behavior near T_t. The result is well explained by the elastic properties calculated in terms of the virtual intermediate states model proposed recently as a mechanism of the first-order α-β phase transition.
