Strong critical scattering of neutrons is measurc:d near the paraelectric-ferroelectricphase transition of deuterated dicalcium strontium prccpionate (DDSP). Theamplitude of motion of the propionate radical in the (001) plane becomes large nearthe Curie temperature T.=279.5 K. The anisotropy in the distribution of the criti-cally scattered intensity is weak compared with other ferroelectrics. The origin of theimproper ferroelectricity of DDSP is attributed to the van der Waals interaction be-tween the propionate radicals which induces secondarily fluctuation of polarizationnear T..ferroelectric, phase transition, DSP, DDSP, neutron, critical scattering, im-proper ferroelectric.
