Resonant Brillouin Scattering in Opaque and Transparent Regions of CdS

Dispersion spectra of Brillouin scattering cross sections are discussed in both opaque and transparent regions. It is found that spectral symmetry of the Brillouin scat-tering cross sections without exciton effect disappears when the exciton effect is takeninto account. Experiments are carried out in CdS by employing reflection light scatter-ing configuration with several lines of argon ion Baser in the opaque region and by us-ing transmission light scattering configuration in the transparent region. The ob-served dispersion spectrum of the Brillouin scattering cross sections shows a goodagreement with the calculated curve when the exciton effect and imaginary part ofresonant Brillouin scattering tensor are taken into account.
