Formation of Root Nudules by Rhizobium huakuii biovar. renge bv. nov. on Astragalus sinicus cv. Japan

Astragalus sinicus (Chinese milk vetch or renge-sou), a winter-growing green manure legume, has been widely used in rice fields to fertilize the soil in Japan and China since the plant forms a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, forms root nodules, and fixes nitrogen in the nodules. We have isolated several bacterial strains from nitrogen-fixing root nodules of renge-sou (A. sinicus cultivar Japan). From taxonomic characterization of the isolates, the strains were found to belong to the species Rhizobium huakuii. We propose that the bacteria be assigned to a new biovariety, R. huakuii biovar. renge, bv. nov. since only these isolates were able to form nodules on the roots of renge-sou. Using these strains, we developed a test tube system for the assay of nodulation on roots of renge-sou. The formation of nodule by R. huakuii bv. renge on roots of rengesou occurred at a low temperature and neutral pH.
