Effect of Bivalent Metal Ions on the Formation of Spermidine Dehydrogenase in Citrobacter freundii

Spermidine dehydrogenase was formed when Citrobacter freundii cells were grown in a medium containing Fe^<2+>, Mg^<2+> of Ca^<2+>. Among these metal ions, Fe^<2+> was found to be the most effective. Formation of the emzyme in the presence of Fe^<2+> was approximately 10% of that when spermidine was used as carbon and nitrogen sources. Fe^<2+> was inert as an electron acceptor for the spermidine dehydrogenase reaction and the effect of Fe^<2+> to form the enzyme was lost when Fe^<2+> was used together with chloramphenicol.
