Magnetic, Transport and Thermal Properties of CeCuAl_3 Single Crystal

We report magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements of single-crystal as well as poly-crystalline specimens of CeCuAl_3 with the tetragonal BaAl_4-type superlattice. The low-temperature specific heat C of either sample exhibits a peak at 2.3〜2.8 K due to the antiferromagnetic transition, but even above the Neel temperature, C/T attains a large value of about 0.8 J/K^2 mol-Ce, suggesting that CeCuAl_3 is a heavy-fermion antiferromagnet. The observed anisotropic susceptibility is well fitted to the calculated one based on a single-ion crystalline field model.
