Antiferroquadrupolar Ordering and Magnetic Properties of the Tetragonal DyB_2C_2 Compound

• Nlagnetic properties xvere inx'estigated on a single-crystallirae DYB2C2 counpound xvitl? tlaetetragonal structure. Spontaneous magnetiz?ttiouas appear along the a- and [1 1 04-directionsbelow IC : 15.3 K. A very small sltoulder is observed oraly along tlae c-axis at Tc) : 24.7 I{,although large A-type atnornalous specific Iaeats are observed at Tcz and T0. Tl'xere exists a largernagnetic anisotropy in the tetrargonal basal plane whicl'r is observed in magnetizatiora processesbelow T0. Netmtron powder diffraction experiments r'eveal that, rauagnetic reflections are observedonly below V'C. In the m?tgnetic?tlly ordered phase, the Dy mornents are ;rrranged to be perpen-dictrlar to neiglabors along tlae c-axis. The results are xvell interpreted by posttmlating that thephase between Tc) and V'Q is an antiferroqtr?xdrtrpolar ordered one. DyB.3Cz is a novel conapoundwith a laigh antiferroqttadrupolar orderinag tettaperature of 24.7 K.
