In rf discharges of 14-50Mc/sec under an axial magnetic field up to 100G, waves are excited by applying sinusoidal currents of 1-100 kc/sec to a small coil surrounding the discharge tube. The waves exhibit standing wave patterns, in spite of absence of reflection, along the plasma column. The wavelengths are independent of the ion mass density and the coil current frequency. They are proportional to the plasma radius, the magnetic field intensity, and the inverse of the discharge frequency. Agreement if found with the theory for space charge waves in a bounded plasma, whose frequencies are equal to the discharge frequencies. Those space charge waves, modulated in amplitude, are shown to be excited by the local density modulations produced by the coil currents in the presence of the rf discharge field. The standing wave patterns are attributed to the synchronization of the waves with the rf discharge field.
