Dispersion and Attenuation of Whistler Waves in a Finite Plasma

Effects of finite r>lasma dimension on the whistler wave propagation in adense plasma (aj>>a:) are investigated theoretically and experimentally. Disper-sion relation for whistler waves in a cylindrical plasma of radius a is solved andcompared with the infinite plane wave solution. For co,a/c';10, the finite sizeeffects become so significant that, below half the electron cyclotron frequency co.,the phase velocity and the damping rate increase in comparison with the infinitecase. Measured dispersion and attenuation are well described by the finite plasmatheory.
