Microstructures of Self-Assembled PbTiO3 Nanoislands Prepared by Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition

Self-assembled PbTiO3 nanoislands were prepared on Pt(110)/SrTiO3(110) and Pt(100)/SrTiO3(100) by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), and their microstructures were investigated. On Pt(110)/SrTiO3(110), the shapes of (101)-PbTiO3 islands changed from square to rectangular ones elongated along the $\langle 010\rangle$ direction as deposition time increased. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected-area electron diffraction results showed that (101)-PbTiO3 nanoislands with deposition times of 10–300 s had a tetragonal structure. TEM observations also revealed that the nucleation of PbTiO3 islands started at the platinum terrace ledge. Piezoresponse force microscopy observations verified that the (101)-PbTiO3 nanoislands deposited for 10–300 s had ferroelectricity. When Pt/SrTiO3(100) was used as a substrate, square-shaped PbTiO3 nanoislands exhibiting ferroelectricity were also obtained.
