A Thermophilic Anaerobe (Clostridium species) Utilizing Various Biomass-Derived Carbohydrates

A cellulolytic, thermophilic, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium with cells 0.5-0.8 by 2-4 μm was newly isolated from compost. The isolate (provisionally designated strain T_X) was identified as a Clostridium sp. on the basis of morphological and physiological characteristics. The potimum temperature and pH for the growth were 60℃ and 6.0-6.5,respectively. It fermented a wide variety of carbohydrates including D-glouse, D-xylose, cellulose, starch, xylan, and pectin, which are the principal constituents in biomass. The main fermentation products were ethanol, acetic acid, CO_2,and H_2. Only a brief pulverization (dry ball-milling for 1-2h) sufficed for the effective decomposition of natural cellulosic wastes such as rice straw by this strain.
