Ethanol fermentation were carried out with Saccharomyces cerevisiae IFO 2347 and baker's yeast in repeated batch cultures with cell reuse. A cross flow filter (hollow fiber module) was utilized for separating the culture brroth in order to maintain a high cell concentration in the fermentor, and for obtaining a high ethanol productivity with short down time between the batches. The final ethanol concentration was 100 g/l when 75% of the broth was filtered out and replaced by fresh medium at the end of each batch. This process could be repeated for more than 25 batches with a stable ethanol yield (0.46 g ethanol/g glucose). The cell concentration reached a maximum of 36 g/l after the 10th batch and remained constant throughout the run. The productivity of this system was about 2 times that of the Melle-Boinot method which was performed on a practical scale, repeating batch cultures with cell reuse by centrifugation instead of cross flow filtration.
