Rhodopseudomonas gelatinosa and R. gelatinosa A1 were studied to investigate the potential for treatment of wastewater from a miso factory and for utilization of the biomass produced in batch culture under aerobic-dark conditions. Optimal temperatures for growth and COD removal in soybean cooked drain medium were 35℃ for R. gelatinosa and 25℃ for R. gelatinosa A1. Maximum specific growth rate, maximum biomass produced and COD removal after 40 hr for R. gelatinosa were 0.19 l/hr, 9.3 g cell/l and 81%, and for R. gelatinosa A1,0.17,10.6 and 79.Major sugar components in soybean cooked drain such as sucrose (5.99 g/l) and raffinose (3.42 g/l) were almost completely consumed by two strains whereas ca. 50% of stachyose (initially 7.27 g/l) remained after 40 hr of cultivation.Biomass contained 62% of crude protein for R. gelatinosa and 63% for R. gelatinosa A1. The protein consisted of appreciable amounts of essential amino acids comparable with those of soybean and egg proteins, and, in particular, methionine contents were 1.89 g/100 g dry cell for R. gelatinosa and 1.71 for R. gelatinosa A1. In addition, the intracellular contents of vitamin B_<12> and carotenoid pigment were 33 μg/g cell and 150 μg/g for R. gelatinosa (35℃), and 23 μg/g and 24 μg/g for R. gelatinosa A1 (25℃).
