Aerobic-Heterotrophic and Photoheterotrophic Growth in Microaerobic-Light Chemostat Cultures of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides S

The effects of the partial pressure of oxygen, P_<O2>, on the growth of a photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides S, under constant illumination were studeid in aerobic-light chemostat cultures. Respiratory and photosynthetic energy-yielding systems functioned simultaneously for cell growth under microaerobic-light conditions.Based on the specific rate of oxygen uptake, the fraction of cells synthesized using energy via respiration and photosynthesis was estimated. The increase of P_<O2> stimulated the aerobic-heterotrophic growth and at higher P_<O2>, preferential growth via respiration was observed. Growth yields from glucose photoassimilated under microaerobic-light conditions were calculated based on the yield obtained for growth under aerobic-dark conditions. The growth yields from glucose photoassimilated were almost constant irrespective of P_<O2> and were the same as those obtained in anaerobic-light cultivation.
