Rapid methane fermentations from formic acid or acetic acid using formate- or acetate-utilizing methanogen were attempted in fixed-bed bioreactors. Among several support materials, baked clay and melted slug were useful to fix the methanogen cells. In the fixed-bed reactors, the cell concentrations could be retained at high concentrations of 20 and 44 g cell/l compared with 0.1 and 0.5 in the usual chemostat cultures. Hence, the rates of substrate consumption and methane production increased up to 6.7 (mol HCOOH/l・day) and 1.7 (mol CH_4/l・day) in formate, and 0.4 and 0.4 in acetate, respectively, compared with 0.16 and 0.037 in formate, and 0.013 and 0.013 in acetate in chemostat cultures without fixed beds. The hydraulic retention time could be shortened from 18 h in chemostat culture to 0.4 h in the fixed-bed culture with formate, and 6.71 days to 0.15 days with acetate.
