Effect of Carbon/Nitrogen Ratio on Encystment Accompanied with Astaxanthin Formation in a Green Alga, Haematococcus pluvialis

With supplementation of acetate to the vegetative growth phase, the green alga Haemotococcus pluvialis was induced to from cyst cells, which was closely associated with a concomitant increase in the DNA content, and decrease in the protein content. These intracellular changes in the algal cells were drastically retarded when acetate was added together with a high concentration of nitrate, indicating that the encystment is triggered by a high carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio. Astazanthin formation was accopmanied with the encrystment induced under the high C/N ratio.
