Optimization of the medium composition for Methanosarcina barkeri growing on methanol (8 g/l) was carried out by two different methods, (i) "one-at-a-time" and (ii) analysis of marginal means (ANOMM) in an orthogonal array experimental design. The second method showed to be very effective in the improvement of the medium composition capable of increasing the gas production rate (CH_4+CO_2) over 1.3 and 2.0 times when compared with the "one-at-a-time" optimized medium and the basal medium, respectively.
