Cyclic AMP and Immune Responses : Cytochemical Identification and Localization of Adenylate Cyclase Responding Cells in Antigen-Stimulated Mouse Spleen

Identification and localization of adenylate cyclase responding cells in antigen-stimulated mouse spleen were cytochemically studied at the electron microscopic level. Sheep erythrocytes injected intravenously into normal C57B1/6 mice stimulated adenylate cyclase activities on plasma membranes of lymphocytes and macrophages located in the peripheral area of splenic lymph follicles. Autologous erythrocytes and carbon particles, however, did not stimulate activation of adenylate cyclase. These findings correlate with the specific cyclic AMP response to immunogenic erythrocytes reported previously and indicate that the increased level of cyclic AMP observed in response to antigen is due to lymphocytes and macrophages showing activation of adenylate cyclase.
