The Utility of Protective Environment and Prophylactic Antibiotics in the Therapy of Leukemia

• Seventeen patients with acute leukemia and blastic crisis of chronic myelogenous leukemia were treated under a protective environment with or without prophylactic antibiotics. To compare the effect of treatment under protective environment, seventeen patients treated in the conventional ward were selected randomly. The number of days febrile and infections were significantly lower under the protective environment than in the conventional ward. In comparisons of patients receiving prophylactic antibiotics or not under the protective environment, the percentage of days febrile to total days and the incidence of infections were significantly lower in the antibiotic prophylaxis group than in the nonantibiotic prophylaxis group. This study has demonstrated statistically significant advantages of treatment with protective environment and antibiotic prophylaxis for prevention of infections.
