Bacteriological Evaluation of an Isolation Ward during Patient Occupancy

Bacteriological monitoring has been performed in an isolation ward consisting of five laminar airflow (LAF) rooms, stock rooms, a service room, decontamination rooms and nurse's station, while occupied by patients undergoing therapy. Organisms were isolated much more frequently from environmental samples obtained from hospital rooms than from LAF rooms. In the isolation ward, stock rooms, sevice rooms and the decontamination room for patients were kept as clean as LAF rooms. The results indicated that the isolation ward of Tokai University Hospital was effective in reducing exposure of the patients to environmental microbial flora and that it provided a satisfactory barrier against most nosocomial contamination.
