Antigenic Competition : Suppression of the Response to a First Antigen by a Second Antigen

Antigenic competition between non-cross-reacting erythrocyte antigens was studied at the cellular level in mice. The injection of horse erythrocytes (HRBC), the second of two antigens in sequence, suppressed the hemolysin plaque-forming cell (PFC) response to sheep erythrocytes (SRBC), the first antigen. Competition was demonstrated not only in the primary PFC response but also in the secondary response. The effect on competition of varying the dose of antigens and the routes and the time of the injections was examined.
