The level of purification in bioclean room A-1 in the bioclean ward of Tokai University Hospital was studied. An HEPA filter installed in the room was effective for horizontal flow. During the operation of the filter, it was proven that aerial bacteria and bacterial fallout to the floor were undetectable, and the dust and germs produced in the air were quickly excluded. With volunteers in the room, some dust production caused by their motions was detected. Remarkable increases were observed during linen exchange, nebulizer administration, and cleaning of the room. After completion of these motions, dust production rapidly decreased and returned to the same status as before. The bacteriological examination performed at the same time revealed negative results for aerial bacteria in the room. According to the above data, this bioclean room is very efficient. The sterilization method was also studied. Formaldehyde gas generated by a homemade generator with formalin was used. The sterilizing effect was determined by the sterilization of bacteria absorbed into swabs in the room. This method was concluded to be very effective, efficient and stable in its effects.
