Effect of Pressure on Magnetic Properties of Heavy Rare Earth Binary Alloys

The magnetic transition temperatures T(, T., T. and 0, and effective numberof Bohr magneton n.(. have been measured as a function of pressure by means ofa standard Hartshorn bridge under hydrostatic pressures up to 6 kbar. Here,T(, T. and 7'N are the temperatures of ferro-antiferromagnetic, ferro-paramagneticand antiferro-paramagnetic transitions, respectively, and 0, is the paramagneticCurie temperature. The absolute values of the pressure derivative 80,fop have aminimum in the vicinity of the average value of de G<Snne factor of the alloys inthe para-state, G,=6.2, while those of 8Tg/8p increase monotonically with increas-ing G in the ordered state. Except Gd alloy system, the pressure coefficient ofn.( f , n;7(Dn .ff /8p), increases with increasing average number of 4f electrons ofthe alloy, V, and changes the sign from negative to positive at about 7V=[0. Theresults obtained are discussed in terms of the molecular field approximation.
