Metamagnetism in TbNi_2Si_2 Single Crystal

We studied magnetic properties i'n the TbNi.Si. single crystal compound bymagnetic and neutron diffraction measurements. The magnetic monaents born ononly Tb are fixed to the c-axis due to a strong crystalline electric effect. ?fhe compoundundergoes a commensurate-incommensurate phase transition at 7'.='=/.9 K; the corn-mensurate phase with A=[l/2, 1/2, 0] is stable below T., and above T., the incom-mensurate one with A=[l/2fr, 172 -r,0] (7=0.074) 8])pC8TS and persists up toIN= 14.6 K. A multi-step metamagne1.ic transition was found in the low temperaturec-axis magnetization process in which at least nine magnetic phases appear. This proc-ess is a typical example of "the devil's staircase" in real c:ompounds.metamagnetism, TbNi.Si., crystal field effect, magnetic structure.
