Superconductivity in ThT_2B_2C and Strong Magnetism in UT_2B_2C (T=Ni, Rh and Pt)

We have synthesized quaternary compounds UT_2B_2C (T=Ni and Rh) and ThT_2B_2C (T=Ni, Rh and Pt) which crystallize in the LuNi_2B_2C-type structure. The uranium compounds with 5f electrons exhibit strong magnetism ; UNi_2B_2C orders antiferromagnetically at 218K and URh_2B_2C orders ferromagnetically at 185 K. In contrast, the nonmagnetic analogues ThNi_2B_2C and ThPt_2B_2C undergo superconducting transitions at 6.5 and 6.7 K, respectively.
