Different Electronic Ground States in the Hexagonal and Cubic Phases of UAu_2Sn

For cubic and hexagonal UAll2SIl, the specific heat and elastic modttlus have been measureddown to 1.3 K in the magnetic field up to 14 T. We have clarified that the 5 f electrons in the cubicand hexagonal phases are localized above 120 K and the both phases are characterized as a non-magnetic heavy-fermion system and an antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion system, respectively. Inthe cubic phase, the 5 f ground state in crystal-electric-field is deterrruined to be a singlet, and thefirst excited state a triplet. In the hexagonal phase, both of the ground and first excited statesare doublets and the grotrnd doublet has an electronic mtrltipolar degeneracy. The differencebetween the ground states of the two phases is discussed in terrns of an electric multipole momentin addition to the competition between the Kondo effect and the RKKY interaction.
