Heavy Fermion Behavior in Extremely Low Carrier Concentration System Yb_4As_3

• We have investigated the series of Yb pnictides with anti-Th.P. structure. Thevalence of Yb varies from abc>ut 2 of Yb.Bi. to 2.25 of Yb.As. with the decreasingweight of the pnictogen. In the case of Yb.As., the 4 f level is located around the bandgap and the charge ordering below about 300 K has been observed. Further, in such asituation, we have observed a c:tear dense Kondo or heavy Fernxion behavior in the resistivity, the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat thouglt the carrier concentralion at 4.2 K is only about 0.001 / Yb"ton. Yb.As. is a new heavy Fermion compoundwhich inquires whether the heavy Fermion state needs free carriers.[Kondo effect, heavy fermiott, low carrier concentration, ch;trge ordering, struc- ll tural transition, Yb pnictidesl
