Magnetization Study of the Valence Fluctuation Compound Sm_3Te_4 at Very Low Temperatures

The ac suscertibilitv X.. and the dc magnetization Al (H, T) of single crvstals of SmaTe,t havebeen measured at temperatures as low as 70 nap. A CLISP is found in X.. at 1.3 K which is slightlylower than the ternperature at which a broad peak of the specific heat was previously observed.Distinct irreversibility is observed in M (H, T) below x 1.3 K. The results indicate that the Srn"moment undergoes a spin glass transition at T. x 1.3 K. It is likely that the two valence statesof Sun"(,7 : 0) and Srn"(,7 : 5/2) are randonaly frozen at low temperatures in the bcc latticeto effectively forrn a randomly diluted antiferrornagnet.
