A Study of Object-Oriented Development Model for Printer Drivers

The designer of device drivers (printer driver) is required to understand of the specification of printer, interface and peripheral LSI of the control target hardware. However, it is difficult for the software designer to understand the hardware manual. Therefore, the software development without referencing the hardware manual becomes a very important subject. In the present paper, first, it is shown that the printer driver can be separated into interface control module and printer control module. Moreover, the configuration of each control module is described. Next, it is pointed out the object modeling of the hardware manual needed in each control module to conceal the manual from the designer. Thus, a model in which each control module can be generated by accessing each object is shown. This model allows the designer to develop a printer driver without concerning each control target specification.
