Photoemission Study of Valence Fluctuation in Yb_4Sb_3 and Yb_4Bi_3

Ultraviolet photoemission spectra of single crystal Yb.Sb. and Yb.Bi. have shownthe valence fluctuation with appreciable density of divalent Yb 4f states at the Fermilevel (A.). The contribution of the surface states in the Yb 4f photoernission region isconfirmed. The remarkable asymmetry of each of the d,7. ancl d.7. component of Sb4d and Bi 5d core levels has rexzealed a strong contribution of Sb 5p and Bi 6p states atE.. The absorption spectrum and the photon energy dependeuace of the photoioniza-lion cross section are evaluated between 35 and 120 eV from the constant final stateand constant initial state spectra.
