Magnetic Properties of Gd-Ce Single Crystal Alloys

Measurements or magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and magnetocrystal-line anisotropy have been made on Gd -Ce alloys with a hexagonal close packedstructure. The value of the effective Bohr magneton number per Gd atom is almostinderendent of Ce concentration. While the saturation magnetic moment per Gdatom decreases slightly with increasing Co concezatration. It is inferred that Cemay be in nonmagnetic tetravalent state in Gd-Co alloys and the decrease of themagnetic moment ascribable to the decrease of the polarization of the conductionband electrons. The anisotropy constant K'j at 4.2 K is negative for all the alloysinvestigated and the absolute value increases rapidly with increasing Co concen-tration. The anisotropy energy of Gd -Co alloy may be attributable to the distor-tion of the Fermi level caused by the addition of tetravalent Co ion to Gd metal.
