Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Observation of Sulfur Adsorbates on Au(111) at Liquid Nitrogen Temperature

The adsorption of sulfur on Au(111) has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at liquid nitrogen temperature. In the initial stage of adsorption, we confirmed that sulfur adsorbs on the fcc stacking area of the “herringbone” structure on Au(111). In addition to single sulfur adatoms, we observed various clusters of different geometries. Referring to the results of theoretical calculations, we showed that the smallest cluster is Au3S3 that has two different atomic configurations with almost identical formation energies. From the simulated STM image of these structures, we found that neither of them reproduces the experimental results but their combination does.
