Estimation of Band Lineups and Optical Gains in CdxZn1-xS/MgyZn1-yS Quantum Wells

We have performed a theoretical study of the exciton-binding energies and the optical gains in CdxZn1-xS/MgyZn1-yS single quantum wells (SQWs). With increasing magnesium (Mg) alloy content ($y$), the conduction band offset increases. The exciton-binding energies increase with increasing Mg content $y$ up to 0.1 in CdxZn1-xS/MgyZn1-yS SQWs. An increase in electron confinement efficiency is observed in CdxZn1-xS/MgyZn1-yS SQWs in comparison with CdxZn1-xS/ZnS SQWs, and then a positive optical gain was achieved at a smaller carrier concentration than that in CdxZn1-xS/MgyZn1-yS SQWs in comparison with CdxZn1-xS/ZnS SQWs at the same effective band gap energy.
