Charge-Vortex Duality Breaking in Small Tunnel Junction Arrays with Finite Width

We have observed the breaking of charge-vortex duality (symmetry) in small Josephson junction arrays with finite widths. The symmetry is broken because of the difference in the sign of their image potential at the edges of the arrays. We show that the critical tunneling resistance for superconductor-insulator transition of the Josephson junction arrays depends on the width.
