Modification of Diacetylene LB Films by Acid and Basic Vapor Treatments before Polymerization

Exposure of diacetylene LB films to the vapor from hydrochloric acid or ammonia water before polymerization has been found to increase the absorbance due to the polymer formed by UV irradiation. It is suggested that these treatments rearrange the monomer molecules which enhances the yeild of polymerization. For the acid-treated case, the absorbance amounts to about three times as large as those of conventionally polymerized films.
