Environmental Effect on Coulomb Blockade in Ultrasmall Single Tunnel Junctions

We measured the lead-resistance dependence of the Coulomb blockade in ultrasmall Al singletunnel junctions. The leads consisted of Al junctions connected in various ways, in order toachieve lead resistances R5 in a wide range 1 -970 kQ. As R5 decreased below the resistancequantum Ry :: h/e' : 25.8kQ, the normalized zero-bias resistance R/R., where R is the zero-bias resistance of the single junction and Rn is the tunnel resistance in the absence of chargingeffect, gradually decreased, indicating the weakening of the Coulomb blockade. On the otherhand, 7?/Rn exhibited little dependence on Rn when Rr. increased above m.. These features areconsistent with theoretical predictions. The dependence of the Coulomb blockade on the leadresistance is very similar to that on the tunnel resistance. A simple model circuit of a singlejunction coupled with a lead impedance accotunts for this similarity.
